Beschreibung: This pair of Biedermeier portraits from 1842 depicts a man and a woman, likely a married couple, within an oval cutout. The man is shown in a period dark jacket and cravat, while the woman is dressed in a gown with a detailed lace collar and her hair styled in a bun, which are typical clothing elements from the Biedermeier period. The works are executed in a mixed media technique, where delicate pencil drawing of facial and clothing details is complemented by watercolor tones for the skin and background, lending the portraits depth and realism characteristic of Biedermeier art. The date '1842' is visible in the lower left of the female portrait. Biedermeier portraits were popular at the time for their ability to capture individual features and personalities, often emphasizing bourgeois life and family values. The paintings are set in original wooden frames with a profiled surface, protecting the works behind glass. The frames show surface wear and minor material loss. The backs of the frames are partially damaged with losses of the original paper backing. The paper on which the portraits are created exhibits small age spots, known as foxing, evenly distributed across the surface of the work. On the reverse side of one of the portraits, an original label from a Parisian shop is present: 'Rue de Paradis, N° 3. A L'INSTITUT PITTERIE, Successeur de P. INTROIT, Graveur M. de Tableaux. Encadrements, Miroirs, Dessins & Gravures. Papeterie. Commerce de Couleurs. Paris.' (Paradise Street, No. 3. At THE PITTERIE INSTITUTE, Successor to P. INTROIT, Engraver, Picture Dealer. Framing, Mirrors, Drawings & Engravings. Stationery. Color Trade. Paris.). This label provides interesting provenance for the works and indicates their original place of acquisition or framing in Paris, thus reinforcing their historical value and authenticity.
