Beschreibung: Etching on paper depicting a significant historical scene of the conclusion of peace between Romulus, the founder and first king of Rome, and Tatius, the king of the Sabines (Cures), following the events associated with the Rape of the Sabine Women. The composition is set in an ancient environment, where figures in period attire and armor negotiate reconciliation. The graphic print is signed in the lower left below the image with the text "Sergenton pinx." (Sergenton painted) and in the lower right with the text "Chauveau sculp." (Chauveau engraved). The work dates from the late 18th or early 19th century, as indicated by the text "Déposé à la Direction" referring to the period of the French Directory. Below the image is the literal text: "PAIX SIGNEE ENTRE ROMULUS ROI DE ROME, ET TATIUS, ROI DES CURES." (Peace signed between Romulus, King of Rome, and Tatius, King of the Cures.) (The abduction of the Sabine women by the Romans having caused the war, the spared horses and interrupted battles strive by their tears and new blood ties to obtain and preserve a peace that will unite them more than a single name of Romans. Deposited at the Directorate.) The paper is yellowed with visible stains and foxing, especially in the lower left corner. The copperplate engraving retains sharp details. The frame is gilded wood with an ornamental relief and minor surface wear. This historical print represents an interesting item for collectors of ancient motifs, French graphic art, and art from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.
