Beschreibung: The item represents traditional Balinese ritual art, likely executed using the frottage technique from a relief woodcarving, or as an original ink drawing on authentic rice paper. This technique combines rich black areas and fine hatching that mimics the texture of wood and the structure of handmade paper. The scene depicts a moment from Balinese folklore, mythology, or Wayang theater. The central figure with a ritual headpiece, body adornments, and oversized eyes is surrounded by three smaller figures at a low table. The figures are in dynamic, ritualistic poses. The figure in the upper part holds an object in an outstretched hand, likely Lontar palm leaves used for sacred texts or a Kris ritual dagger wrapped in cloth. The lines around the hand and object show the characteristic fraying of handmade paper fibers as the ink is absorbed, indicating the authenticity of the material and execution. These specific works of Balinese frottage became a phenomenon especially from the 1930s to the 1970s, when tourism and interest from Western collectors boomed in Bali, particularly in art centers like Ubud or Sanur, under the influence of artists such as Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet. Local carvers created elaborate low reliefs in hardwood. Moistened rice paper was placed over the finished relief, and the relief was manually imprinted using a textile pad soaked in black Chinese ink. The work is set under glass in its original, solid wooden frame with a patina and a silvered/gilded inner profile. This framing corresponds to how Western or Czechoslovak intellectuals and travelers in the mid-20th century had souvenirs and art objects from their travels framed.
