Beschreibung: This oil on cardboard represents a characteristic example of French post-war landscape painting. The scene captures an idyllic river or canal embankment in a small French town, most likely in Brittany, as suggested by the specific architecture of stone houses with slate roofs and a slender church tower in the background. The composition is dominated by a massive tree in the right foreground, its crown displaying rich autumn shades of yellow, orange, and ochre. The artist masterfully uses color contrasts – the warm tones of autumn leaves sharply contrast with the cool blue of the water surface and the shadows on the house facades. The distinct texture of the painting, with visible, energetic brushstrokes and layered paint (impasto), gives the entire scene extraordinary dynamism and plasticity. Light filtering through the clouds creates vibrant reflections on the water's surface and underscores the melancholic yet radiant atmosphere of a sunny autumn day. In the lower right corner, there is the characteristic, clearly legible artist's signature: MAX. E. CLART, with the surname rendered in the typical geometric frame that the painter used in his works. The painting is in excellent, intact condition, the paint is stable with no craquelure, and the color layer has fully retained its original saturation. The work is housed in a period frame with an inner textile passe-partout (canvas linen profile) and a narrow white line that optically opens the painting. On the reverse, there is a label with the inscription "L'AUTOMNE A LANDELLES" (Autumn in Landelles) and dimensions "24 X 30". Max-Ernest Clart (1916–1996) was a Franco-Belgian painter renowned especially for his atmospheric landscapes, seascapes, and views of ancient French streets and harbors. His work fully developed in the post-war period. Clart was fascinated by the changing light on the northern coast of France. He often painted en plein air, striving to express the inner mood of a place using thick layers of pure colors. His style combines a solid compositional structure with a loose, almost expressive application of paint. During his lifetime, he exhibited at numerous salons in France and Belgium, and his works found their way into many private collections across Europe.
