Beschreibung: A graphic print depicting the fall of the Jacobin Terror, known as IX. THERMIDOR, from the French Revolution period, dated approximately to 1795. The scene shows the „Protective Genius“, representing the government or Senate, suppressing the tyranny of the Jacobin Terror with a fiery sword and liberating the Sciences, Arts, Chemistry, and Physics, which had been imprisoned by the Jacobins. The central wreath of the graphic contains the inscription „IX. THERMIDOR“, complemented by republican symbolism. In the lower right section, a poetic exclamation is placed: „ANARCHISTES TREMBLÉS, LE GOUVERNEMENT VEILLE... ROYALISTES TREMBLÉS, VOTRE RAGE EST PAREILLE, LE MÊME BRAS ENCORE PEUT VOUS ÉCRASER TOUS.“ This translates to: „Tremble anarchists, the government watches... Tremble royalists, your rage is the same, the same arm can still crush you all.“ The paper exhibits typical foxing, caused by the oxidation of iron impurities and organic particles in handmade paper, which is common for materials from the 18th and early 19th centuries. The print is composed of two parts, joined by a vertical seam in the middle, reflecting the technological capabilities of the time when it was not possible to draw such wide sheets of paper in one piece. The collector's mark with the monogram S in a circle, imprinted in the lower right and near the central wreath, is a small circular collector's stamp. This embossed monographic collection mark, known as Marques de Collections, was stamped by historical collectors and print cabinets on the margins of original prints in the 18th and 19th centuries, indicating that the print passed through a significant historical or noble collection. Both the text and the scene were engraved directly onto a copper plate, from which the ink was pressed onto damp paper under pressure.
