Beschreibung: This steel engraving depicts a key moment in French history – the capture of the Paris City Hall (Hôtel de Ville) on July 28, 1830, in Paris. This event is an integral part of the July Revolution, also known as the “Three Glorious Days,” which led to the fall of King Charles X and the subsequent ascension of Louis-Philippe to the French throne. The depiction captures the intense battle between Parisian insurgents and the Royal Guard in front of the City Hall building. In the center of the composition, a young man is shown with a sabre and a tricolor, the French flag, which definitively became the national symbol of France during this revolution. Royal Guard soldiers with artillery and cavalry open fire, but the people do not stop and advance. Below the lithograph is the original French text: "LE 28 JUILLET 1830 PRISE DE L'HÔTEL DE VILLE PAR LA TROISIÈME FOIS PAR LES PARISIENS, UNE COLONNE DE GARDES ROYAUX COMPOSÉE D'INFANTERIE, CAVALERIE ET D'ARTILLERIE, FORTE DE 1500 HOMMES PLACÉS DEVANT L'HÔTEL DE VILLE ET DANS LES RUES ENVIRONNANTES EN ATTENDANT QUE LE MOMENT DE SE MESURER AVEC LES DÉFENSEURS DE NOS LIBERTÉS, ET POUR QUE LES PARISIENS PURENT ILS AU COIN DU QUAI, PELLETIER ET DE LA TROUPE QUE LES TROUPES FIRENT FEU SANS AUCUN ENGAGEMENT, SUSCITAIT UN APPARAITRE UN JEUNE HOMME TENANT À UNE MAIN UN SABRE ET DE L'AUTRE UN DRAPEAU TRICOLORE SE METTRE À LA TÊTE DE CES CAMARADES ET LEUR DIT DU COURAGE MES AMIS LA VICTOIRE EST ENCORE À NOUS, MALGRÉ LES MITRAILLEUSES ET LES BALLES LE PEUPLE JANCA SUR LES TROUPES AU CRI DE VIVE LA CHARTE, VIVE LA LIBERTÉ, LES GARDES ROYAUX HARCELÉS SE PRESSÈRENT DE FRANCHIR LEUR PLACE UN ILS SONT TERRIBLEMENT ASSAILLIS DE TOUTES PARTS; ILS TRAVERSENT LE QUAI DE L'EVIER, OU QUELQUES INSTANT AVANT LA GARDE À CHEVAL ET LA GENDARMERIE AVAIENT ÉPROUVÉ UN CHOC CONSIDÉRABLE; ET EN MOINS DE QUELQUE HEURES LES PARISIENS S'ÉTAIENT MAITRE DE L'HÔTEL DE VILLE POUR LA TROISIÈME FOIS." This text describes the events of July 28, 1830, when the Parisians captured the City Hall for the third time that day, stating that the Royal Guard, comprising over 1500 men with artillery and cavalry, opened fire, but the people did not stop. It also mentions a young man with a sabre and a tricolor flag leading the insurgents with the cry "long live the charter, long live liberty." The publisher of the lithograph is the printing house "CHEZ CUTRU, MONTAGNE STE GENEVIÈVE N° 23, À PARIS," as indicated at the bottom of the work. This valuable historical document served to disseminate revolutionary news and celebrate the people's victory over the monarchy, representing a visual testimony to one of the key moments in French history. The lithograph shows yellowing of the paper, minor stains, and slight undulation. The wooden frame has minor abrasions and patina, consistent with its period of creation and use.
