Description: The Eureka is a typewriter from around 1910, manufactured by the French company Kratz-Boussac, founded by Henri-Kratz Boussac in 1883. This type of typewriter is known as an index typewriter, meaning that instead of a traditional keyboard, it uses a rotating wheel ("daisy wheel") for selecting individual characters. To use the machine, one rotates a wooden handle to the desired character, and then pressing it prints the character onto paper. An ink roller is located on the wheel, touching each character as it passes underneath to imprint it. The paper is fed over rollers positioned under the machine's wooden base. Eureka typewriters were often re-branded and sold under various names, such as Stollwerck (for the German chocolate company Stollwerck GmbH), or under the names La Française and American for Francophone markets. The machines were available in various finishes, such as brass, red, or green, and often came with a composite material base and protective cover. The simplicity and affordability of these typewriters made the Eureka a popular item, used as a toy or for basic writing.
