Description: This set of four antique forged or cast steel elements represents historical crossguards designed for sabre hilts, where they served to protect the hand from an opponent's blade strikes. Dating from 1790–1840, these pieces exhibit typical characteristics of the European variant of Oriental style prevalent at the time, when Western armourers uniquely adapted Asian and Middle Eastern influences into the design of cold weapons. The components feature a characteristic rhomboid central profile with an opening for the blade's tang and side arms ending in protective rounded finials. The exceptional craftsmanship of these elements is evidenced by the detailed relief decoration on their obverse sides – one piece bears a finely engraved motif of a running deer by a blossoming flower, and another piece is adorned with an ornament depicting a bird, reflecting the then-current aesthetics inspired by the Orient. The entire set is in its original found condition with authentic dark patina and traces of surface corrosion, making it an attractive material for collectors and restorers of historical cold weapons and militaria from the periods of Classicism, Empire, and early Biedermeier.
