Description: This massive rectangular object made of black stone (likely polished marble or slate) served as a desk paperweight or a decorative plaque. The decoration on the front combines engraving with the technique of stone inlay (pietra dura). The central motif is a circular medallion with an engraved profile of a ruler (stylized Cleopatra or an Egyptian queen) with an elaborate headdress, framed by a red stone ring. On the sides of the medallion are engraved stylized Egyptian hieroglyphs, motifs of papyrus and a bird (ibis/falcon). The entire composition is framed by a rectangular band inlaid with a fine mosaic of green malachite with four red circular accents in the corners. The bottom side shows natural signs of wear, scratches, and is fitted with four newer felt pads to protect furniture from scratching. Small chips and patina corresponding to the age of the item are visible along the edges of the stone.
