Description: This watercolor represents a historical document from the period of the First World War. It is an authentic testimony to life in the Holzminden prisoner-of-war camp in Germany, which was primarily designated for officers of enemy forces. The painting captures a night scene of the camp with illuminated wooden barracks under a starry sky, enclosed by a fence. In the middle of a snowy or muddy open space stands a solitary figure of a guard with a rifle and a dog. The use of street lamp light in contrast with the darkness of the night depicts the atmosphere of the environment. The work contains two French inscriptions. On the left is the inscription "SOUVENIR DE MA CAPTIVITÉ. OCTOBRE 1914 - MARS 1915", which translates to "Memory of my Captivity. October 1914 – March 1915". This text dates the creation or subject matter to the first months of the First World War. On the right is the inscription "CAMP D'HOLZINDEN. R. VEILLON.", identifying the location and the author R. Veillon, likely a French soldier or officer imprisoned in the camp. From a technical perspective, the work is precise, with a detailed capture of the night atmosphere and spatial depth. The work has collector's value as militaria and an example of so-called camp art (PoW art), offering a specific personal memory of a particular place and time. The watercolor is matted and framed.
