Description: Origin: Great Britain, London Studio/Publisher: T. H. Gladwell (21 & 87 Gracechurch Street, London) Technique: Period hand-colored photograph in a passe-partout Dating: Mid-19th century (Victorian era) Condition: Original mounting, preserved manufacturer's label on the reverse, slight patina commensurate with age. Work Description: A rare preserved hand-colored photograph from the mid-19th century, originating from the prestigious Gracechurch Street address in London. The portrait captures a young woman in elaborate period attire; delicate hand-coloring (especially on the face and jewelry details) adds depth to the image and served as a substitute for the then-expensive painted miniatures. A crucial element for collectors is the original T. H. Gladwell company label on the reverse. Thomas Henry Gladwell was at the time one of London's most prominent art and photography dealers. His firm (established as early as 1834) specialized in the most modern optical instruments and the import of photographs, making this piece an interesting artifact from the history of early photography. Framing: The portrait is set in its original wooden, gilded frame with a beaded decor. The inner cutout of the passe-partout in an arched shape is typical for the mid-19th century and emphasizes the nobility of the depicted person.
