Description: A graphic print titled "Sadness" by Maxmilián Pirner depicts a symbolist theme of a grieving figure bowed before an altar or tombstone. The composition is complemented by details such as a crown of thorns, a candlestick, and garlands, referencing the Passion theme. The work is characterized by an intimate and mystical mood, underscored by muted colors and soft, diffused candlelight, which is characteristic of Pirner's work. The signature "M. PIRNER" is located at the bottom of the circular scene. Maxmilián Pirner (1854–1924) was a prominent Czech painter of Symbolism and Art Nouveau, working as a professor at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts. His work is valued for its dreamlike atmosphere and spiritual themes. The work is set in an Art Nouveau frame dated around 1900. The frame is an exemplary example of Czech Art Nouveau with a geometric shape and square cutouts in the upper corners, a typical element of Viennese and Prague Art Nouveau. The frame's ornamentation includes a botanical decor, likely mistletoe or laurel, engraved into the gray surface, and a green relief in the lower part, which harmoniously complement the subject of the painting. The painting is well-preserved; the frame shows traces of use and minor abrasions on the finish. On the reverse side of the frame, there is a label with the text: "F. TOPIČ KNIHKUPECTVÍ A NAKLADATELSTVÍ TOPIČŮV SALON ÚSTŘ. ZÁVOD UMĚLECKÝ LIBRAIRIE FRANÇAISE PRAZE Ferdinandova tř. II.". Translated, this means: F. Topič Bookstore and Publishing House, Topič's Salon, Central Art Establishment, French Bookstore, Prague Ferdinandova Street II. This label refers to the prestigious Topič's Salon in Prague, which underscores the cultural and collectible value of the item from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
