Description: The embroidered picture presents a landscape scenery from the famous Hangzhou region near West Lake. The composition depicts a stone bridge arching over a tranquil stream, surrounded by trees and greenery, a typical scene from this protected landscape area. The work is crafted using Chinese silk embroidery technique, likely in the Suzhou embroidery style, which is prized for its delicacy and ability to imitate painting in detail. In the upper part of the embroidery, there is text embroidered in traditional Chinese, written from right to left: 九 溪 十 八 澗. This inscription translates as "Nine Streams and Eighteen Pools" (alternatively "Nine Streams and Eighteen Brooks / Gorges") and refers to a specific scenic spot in Hangzhou. The numbers "nine" and "eighteen" symbolize in Chinese culture a large, uncountable number of watercourses in the landscape. The frame of the work is covered with bamboo veneer, which is a characteristic element of Chinese and Japanese export art crafts from the late 19th and first half of the 20th century. This decorative art craft was imported from Asia to Europe during that period as goods for collectors and lovers of oriental art.
