Description: This extraordinary, hand-painted decorative plate, 55 cm in diameter, is an example of historical maiolica (faience), likely of Italian provenance, dated to the 18th century. The central motif is a Latin sacral inscription on an unfurled yellow ribbon: “SUB UMBRA ALARUM TUARUM PROTEGE NOS” (Under the shadow of thy wings protect us), a biblical plea from the Psalms. The script is rendered in a Gothicizing minuscule, encircling a central olive branch. The slightly distorted spelling of the text is characteristic of the craftsmanship of the period. The ornamental decoration is arranged into radial segments combining Neo-Gothic and early Renaissance motifs. The color palette is based on the classic triad of maiolica glazes – cobalt blue, ocher yellow, and earthy brown, complemented by details in a turquoise green tone. The rim of the plate features alternating fields with acanthus decor and stylized trefoils. The reverse side reveals a light, coarser tin glaze with imperfections and small pinholes from firing in wood-fired kilns. On the base, a hand-written underglaze mark of the artist or workshop is present, along with an additionally inscribed black inventory number “25”, indicating its origin from a noble or museum collection. From a technological perspective, this piece bears two historical characteristics. The plate exhibits warping and bowing of its form, resulting from natural material tension and fluctuating heat during the firing of such a massive piece in a historical kiln. This unevenness in shape is evidence of handcraftsmanship. In the past, the plate was broken into several large segments and subsequently period-restored and glued. Connecting cracks and minor glaze chips along the breaks are visible on both the obverse and reverse sides. The item is a suitable addition to historical interiors or specialized collections of early ceramics.
