Description: Tripod side table, dating from the Historicism to late Art Nouveau period, i.e., the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. This type of furniture, known in the Anglo-Saxon world as a candlestand or tilt-top table, is characteristic of Austro-Hungarian bourgeois interiors. The table's construction consists of a central turned leg that divides into three curved legs at the bottom, ensuring stability on the uneven floors of the period. The tabletop has a shaped, serpentine profile with darker trim around the perimeter. A brass plaque is located on the underside of the top, referring to the Imperial and Royal court department store “U Města Paříže”, located at Celetná Street No. 15 in Prague. The department store, renowned for selling haberdashery, toys, decorations, mechanical music boxes, and small furniture, marked its goods with these brass plaques. The text on the plaque reads: C. K. DVORNÍ DŮM SE ZBOŽÍM OZDOBNÝM U MĚSTA PAŘÍŽE V PRAZE CELETNÁ ULICE Č 15 K. U. HOF. GALANTERIE WAAREN HAUS ZUR STADT PARIS. In households of that time, these tables served to hold small items, as stands for lamps or candles, or as ladies' sewing tables or gentlemen's smoking tables.
