Description: Industrial landscape from the North Bohemian lignite basin area, dated to 1965. The foreground of the work is dominated by raw, rocky terrain, evoking the edge of a quarry or a wild river valley. In the background of the horizon, a vast industrial complex with smoking chimneys and cooling towers is captured, a typical scene from the then Most region, Sokolov region, or Ostrava region. The painting represents a combination of a deep coal mine and a thermal power plant or chemical complex from the mid-1960s. The work is executed in pastel, or possibly a combined technique of chalk and pastel, on paper. It is mounted under glass with a passe-partout. Pastel allowed the artist to achieve a dynamic and quick brushwork, which is particularly evident in the texture of the rocks and the sky. The painting lies on the border between late Impressionism and 1960s Civilism. The artist masterfully captured a dramatic, heavy sky full of low-flying clouds that colorfully harmonize with the smoke rising from the factories. The work is signed in the lower right "M. Kalata 65". The painting is dated to 1965. The painting is set in its original period profiled frame from the 1960s. The frame is made of a combination of a creamy white strip with gold outer toning. Minor scuffs are visible on the surface of the frame.
