Description: This graphic work represents a significant gallant scene of 18th-century French Rococo, known as LE COUCHER DE LA MARIÉE (The Bride's Bedtime). The work was created around 1768 in Paris and is executed using the copper engraving and etching technique on period handmade paper. The scene depicts an intimate moment where bridesmaids and maids undress the bride and put her into a luxuriously decorated four-poster bed. It is a classic example of the piquant Rococo genre, which was popular among the French nobility during the reign of Louis XV. The original model for this graphic work was a painting or gouache by PIERRE-ANTOINE BAUDOUIN (1723–1769). Below the print, in the lower left, is the signature “PEINT À LA GOUASSE PAR P. A. BAUDOUIN”, meaning "Painted in gouache by P. A. Baudouin". The engraving work was carried out by JEAN-MICHEL MOREAU LE JEUNE (1741–1814), who etched the foundation of the work, and JEAN-BAPTISTE SIMONET (1742–1813), who completed the engraving. This collaboration is recorded below the print in the lower right with the text “GRAVÉ À L'EAU F.TE PAR J. M. MOREAU LE JNE ET TERMINÉ PAR J. B. SIMONET”, which can be translated as "Etched by J. M. Moreau le Jeune and completed by J. B. Simonet". At the bottom of the printing plate is a complete dedication with a family crest: “LE COUCHER DE LA MARIÉE DÉDIÉ A TRÈS HAUT ET TRÈS PUISSANT SEIGNEUR ARMAND-CHARLE-EMMANUEL D'HAUTEFORT, COMTE D'HAUTEFORT, MARQUIS DE VILLACERF...". This dedication was addressed to Count d'Hautefort. The scene itself is excellently preserved and has a sharp, deep print impression. On the bottom edge below the text and on the edges of the paper, moisture stains and minor oxidative spots (foxing) are visible. This graphic work is represented in the collections of significant institutions such as the National Gallery in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and the British Museum, which underscores its historical and artistic value in the context of French Rococo.
