Description: A starboard marine navigation lamp from the traditional British ship accessories manufacturer Davey & Co. London, founded in 1885. This position lantern dates from the late 19th to early 20th century and was originally designed for kerosene or petroleum illumination. The brass plate clearly bears the embossed designation DAVEY'S PATENT IMPROVED REGULATION SHIP LAMP. The letters A C D L in the corners of the plate refer to Arthur Christopher Davey of London, the founder and owner of the company. The "Patent Improved Regulation Ship Lamp" designation signifies that the lamp complied with the strict British maritime regulations (Board of Trade) for ship navigation lighting of the early 20th century. The iron body is zinc-coated (galvanized). The lantern can be identified as a starboard lamp by its specific optical lens designed for the vessel's right side. The interior is currently empty; originally, it housed a removable all-brass kerosene (oil) burner with a reservoir and a glass chimney. A circular opening in the top lid served to vent heat and combustion products from the burning fuel. The inside of the lantern shows traces of soot and natural corrosion, confirming its active use at sea. The top hinge with brass clasp is complete and functional.
