Description: An artistic papercut, known as Scherenschnitt in German-speaking countries and papercut in English. The motif depicts a fairy tale scene, most often identified as Cinderella (Aschenbrödel / Aschenputtel), sitting by a window surrounded by doves and birds, sorting peas. The entire image is created by precise cutting from a single piece of black paper using fine scissors or a scalpel. The resulting motif is then glued onto a light, contrasting background, which shows some discoloration in places. The visual style is characterized by depicting figures and scenes only in outlines (shadow theater / silhouettes), with details achieved by cutting out internal areas, known as negative space. The work is dated to the period around 1920–1930. This style and motif are often associated with original works or reproductions by the German artist Lotte Gützlaff. Unsigned. The frame is wooden, with a gilt-imitating finish, showing minor abrasions and surface patina. The back of the frame is covered with a paper layer.
