Beschreibung: This mask is an example of the ritual art of the Bambara ethnic group, which inhabits the area of present-day Mali. It represents a typology of masks associated with initiation into secret male societies, such as the Komo or Kore associations. The artifact is characterized by a high degree of abstraction, where human features are suppressed in favor of symbolic geometry. The dominant crest on the top of the head symbolizes spiritual power and authority, while the minimalist rendering of the face – narrow eyes and protruding mouth – refers to the tranquility and inner discipline of the initiates. The mask is carved from a single massive block of hard tropical wood and bears traces of traditional manual shaping with an adze. Its surface is covered with a deep, dark pigment patina, which resulted from repeated applications of oils and ritual smoking. This process gives the wood a characteristic velvety sheen and protects it from external influences. The lower edge of the mask is provided with regular holes, which served to attach a rich costume made of plant fibers (raffia), which completely concealed the wearer's identity during the dance. From a craftsmanship perspective, this is a very authentic piece. The inner side of the mask shows natural wear and tool marks, which are not common in modern tourist copies. The mask conveys a strong, ascetic impression and is installed on a modern wooden pedestal, making it a distinctive collector's and interior object. Its value lies primarily in the purity of its forms and the well-preserved condition of the material, which bears clear signs of historical use.
