Description: This intimate work from 1984 is an example of working with watercolors. The artist combines the transparency of watercolor, which he used for soft transitions of the grey sky and subtle shadows on the snow, with the opaque quality of gouache. It is with gouache that the brightest white areas of fresh snow and the impasto details of branches are created, giving the painting depth and an almost tangible relief. The scene captures a snowy path in an orchard, leading the viewer's eye to a solitary building in the background. Karel Kroupa's expressive hand is evident in the dynamic strokes with which he rendered the silhouettes of the trees. These appear very lively and dramatic in the frosty air. The color palette, built on contrasts of cold blue-grey tones and warm ochre patches of thawing ground, perfectly evokes the mood of late winter. Karel Kroupa (1930–1986) was a respected Czech artist and is primarily associated with quality drawing and watercolor. It was in these techniques that Kroupa excelled in his ability to capture fleeting moments and the luminous atmosphere of the Czech landscape. His works from the 1980s are considered the peak of his oeuvre, when his style settled into a form of lyrical expressionism, emphasizing an inner experience of nature.
