Description: A series of five graphic sheets, etchings on paper, set in a wooden frame. Each sheet presents a portrait study in the characteristic style of the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn. These are reproductions of original works, executed using etching technique by the renowned engraver W. Unger, who specialized in interpretations of old masters. On each sheet, the signature "Rembrandt pinx." (Rembrandt painted) is in the lower right, and "W Unger sculps." (W. Unger engraved) is in the lower left. The individual prints are placed in a wooden frame with a dark, profiled outer molding and light wooden dividers that separate the individual motifs. The frame is glazed. The paper shows a slight patina and minor stains. The wooden frame bears minor signs of use. The ensemble forms a decorative and collector's item from the mid-19th century, bringing the atmosphere of the old masters. W. Unger, full name William Unger (1837–1932), was a German engraver and professor, known for his reproductions of old masters.
