Description: The painting depicts a landscape motif with a mountain mill, dominated by a white building with a water wheel, complemented by rocky terrain and lush greenery. Flowing water tumbles over stones, adding dynamism to the composition. It is an oil painting on board, set in an oval gilded wooden frame with decorative ornaments. On the reverse side of the work, there is a label with handwritten text: “HORSKÝ MLÝN - JOSEF MÁNES (ORIG. FROM NATIONAL GALLERY) STUDY FIDLER L”. Another label contains information about Josef Mánes: “JOSEF MÁNES 1820-1871 JOS. MÁNES'S LANDSCAPE REGISTER IS RICH. HE SURPRISED, FOR EXAMPLE, WITH COURBET'S POWER IN RENDERING THE DRY MASSES OF "HORSKÉHO MLÝNA" WHERE, IN THE NATURALNESS OF THE RENDERING, HE ACHIEVED A REALISM IN WHICH ONLY AFTER TWO TO THREE DECADES LEB. CHITTUSSI AND AFTER HIM THE GENERATION OF ANT. SLAVÍČEK W. ŠTECH CONTINUED”. The painting shows no visible damage. The surface of the gilded frame shows abrasions and local losses of gilding, especially on prominent parts and edges. The work is a study based on an original by Josef Mánes, drawing inspiration from his landscape work, which is characterized by its realism and detail. This painting is a valuable example of the artistic rendition of a well-known motif and represents an fascinating collector's item for those interested in Czech landscape painting and studio studies.
