Description: A thick-walled recessed washbasin made of fine earthenware (faïence fine) imported from Belgium. The item dates from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, corresponding to the Art Nouveau stylistic period, approximately 1890 – 1915. It represents an example of artisanal production of sanitary ceramics intended for bourgeois homes and dressing tables. The washbasin is made of glazed fine earthenware with authentic patina and subtle crazing, confirming its age of over 100 years. On the exterior, there is an underglaze factory mark with a heraldic motif, a coat of arms with a helmet and lions, and a Latin motto. The full inscription of the mark is BOCH FRÈRES KERAMIS LA LOUVIÈRE BELGIQUE PER ASPERA AD ASTRA. The design is intended for recessed installation, for example, into a marble top of a washstand or a solid wooden slab. It has an oval, deep profile without a faucet hole, suggesting the use of a wall-mounted faucet or manual pouring of water from a pitcher. It is equipped with a unique integrated ceramic overflow elbow, a so-called 'trunk', located on the outer side of the bowl. This element is ideal for authentic reconstruction of an Art Nouveau bathroom, a historic villa, a cottage, or a First Republic interior. It can serve as a furniture solitaire to be recessed into a renovated historic dressing table or chest of drawers. Given its traceable origin and preserved marking, it is an interesting decoration for collectors and lovers of sanitary history. We recommend selecting the washbasin in person, as pieces may vary slightly.
