Description: A painting depicting a view from Svitavy Square (Náměstí Míru in Svitavy). The scene is conceived as a vista through one of the typical arcades of the local bourgeois houses towards the northern or northeastern part of the square. The prominent church tower and chancel of the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary dominate the background. The architecture of the characteristic elongated square with its continuous row of arcades and gabled houses is typical for Svitavy. This is an oil on canvas painting. The composition is dynamic; the arch of the arcade forms a natural dark frame for the church's presbytery and the brightly lit square under a dramatic sky. The work is signed "J. Pavliš" in red-pink color in the lower right. The author is Jaroslav Pavliš, a regional artist who specialized in vedutas of Czech and Moravian towns. The technique of viewing through an arcade, known as enfilade or architectural framing, was popular among urban veduta artists in the first half of the 20th century. The period of creation of this work is estimated to be the mid-20th century. The canvas and painting are in stable condition. The painting is set in its original solid profiled gilded frame from approximately the 1930s-1950s. The frame shows minor patina and traces of woodworm in the form of small holes.
