Description: The painting represents a mature example of Central European Impressionism from the early 20th century. The artist, a native of Liberec, masterfully captures the play of light and shadow in a birch grove. The application of color is energetic, utilizing the impasto technique (layering of paint), which lends plasticity and dynamism to the work. The color composition, based on ochre, olive, and purple tones, is characteristic of the Munich landscape school, where the artist studied during this period. Biography of the Artist / Biografie der Autorin Greta Havránek (1892, Liberec – 1952, Freiburg im Breisgau) She was a significant representative of the German-Czech art scene. She began her studies in 1910 at the Academy in Munich. Even in her youth, contemporary critics described her as a 'courageously creative Impressionist.' She regularly exhibited at Prague's Rudolfinum (Praguer Kunstsalon) and Munich's Glaspalast. She was a member of the Association of German Women Painters (from 1915) and the prestigious Munich Art Association (from 1917). Her works are represented in private collections in Bohemia and Germany and constitute a high-quality example of modern landscape painting from the first half of the 20th century.
