Description: A pewter vessel with a lid and an inner insert, known as a Sustenteur, popular in France at the end of the 18th century. These vessels were originally used as a medical aid for preparing clear meat and vegetable broths for people with sensitive stomachs. They functioned on the principle of a pressure cooker – meat or vegetables were cooked in a hermetically sealed pot for hours in a water bath, creating a germ-free broth. A mark with a lion and the number 2 is stamped on the bottom of the lid, confirming the verified volume of the vessel. This is a historical object dated from the late 18th to the first half of the 19th century.
