Description: The FRANCOTYP franking machine is a type of postal stamping machine historically used in offices and postal operations to automatically stamp envelopes. Instead of manually affixing postage stamps, the machine printed a postal impression directly onto the envelope, confirming postage payment. The main functions of these devices were efficiency in sending large volumes of mail, the ability to set and print a specific postage value according to the weight and type of shipment, and to ensure a professional appearance of shipments with the option to overprint an advertising message or company logo. The machines helped companies track postage expenses and monitor their usage. Francotyp-Postalia, now known as FP, is one of the oldest manufacturers of this technology, with over a century of history in the field. The model shown is a historical piece. The image of the production plate provides interesting context for this machine: Supplier: In then-Czechoslovakia, the machine was distributed or serviced by B. JAROLÍMEK A.S., located in Prague, Perštýn (number 15). Ownership: The inscription "KLIŠE VÝPLAT. RAZÍTKA A KLÍČE JSOU VLASTNICTVÍM POŠTOV. SPRÁVY" (PAYMENT DIE, STAMPS AND KEYS ARE THE PROPERTY OF THE POSTAL ADMINISTRATION) explains why this machine was so strictly monitored. Because a franking machine essentially "printed money" (postage stamps), its printing part (die) and access mechanisms (keys) were under strict control by the postal administration to prevent fraud. Historical context: This is a document from a time when Jarolímek was an important intermediary for office technology in interwar or post-war Czechoslovakia. This particular piece has a production (or inventory) number 22434. It is a beautiful technical artifact that documents the history of official and postal correspondence in Prague. The label also states: "FRANCOTYP", "B. JAROLÍMEK A.S. PRAHA, PERŠTÝN 15. TEL. 20898, 22474, 30750."
