Description: Cast iron acetylene generator marked "Décret du 30 Avril 1880 – 7,50 kg", manufactured in France at the end of the 19th century. The apparatus was used to produce acetylene gas by reacting water with calcium carbide, which was subsequently used for lighting or soldering. A massive screw-mechanism closure ensures a pressure seal, and there is a drain valve on the side. This is a technical artifact documenting the era before the widespread adoption of electric lighting.
