Description: This massive all-metal tool consists of two halves joined by a hinge, which, when closed, create a series of circular holes with graduated diameters. The tool served craftsmen (plumbers, boilermakers, or mechanics) to firmly clamp copper or lead pipes of various sizes, the edges of which were then expanded and shaped by hammer blows or a conical mandrel to create a joint (so-called flaring or belling). The fixture is equipped at its free end with a robust tightening mechanism with a thread and a rotating lever made of dark brass, which ensured an extremely firm grip of both arms so that the pipe would not slip during work. The massive metal body bears an even dark patina, traces of oil, and slight surface corrosion consistent with its age and workshop use, but the tool is mechanically fully functional and represents a great technical decoration or a collector's piece of old craftsman's equipment.
