Description: A figure of a worker in full physical exertion turning a ship's capstan (pachole) with massive anchor chain links at the base of the column. This theme is listed in international catalogs under titles such as "Docker," "Man at Work," or "An Art Deco figure of a man turning a ship's capstan." The sculpture is made of patinated terracotta (fired clay). Terracotta versions are typical for Henri Bargas's work of this size, although the artist exceptionally also realized this motif in a bronze casting. The base bears the engraved signature H. BARGAS. The work dates to the 1920s and 1930s, corresponding to the Art Deco period. Cracks are visible on the base and the figure's body. Henri Bargas was a French sculptor born in Paris at the end of the 19th century, who achieved his most significant artistic success in the 1920s and 1930s. He studied under André Vermare and closely collaborated with furniture design icon Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann and sculptor Édouard-Marcel Sandoz. He regularly exhibited at the Parisian Salon des Artistes Français. His style was strongly influenced by ancient sculpture and the monumental, muscular style of Émile-Antoine Bourdelle. The work represents an Art Deco celebration of physical strength, dynamism, and industrial civilism.
