Description: This deep plate with a characteristically wavy rim represents a prime example of British stoneware from the period 1790–1840, when the fascination with Oriental motifs peaked in Europe. The rich underglaze blue print combines decorative European scrollwork and floral motifs on the wide rim with a detailed Asian scenery in the central well, depicting pagodas, gazebos, a river bridge, palm trees, and figures in a boat. On the underside, there is a blue underglaze mark in an elaborate cartouche with the pattern name "Chinese Marine", the designation for quality hard earthenware "OPAQUE CHINA", and the manufacturer's initial "M", complemented by an embossed star.
